TOYOTA RALLY SA
Day 1 Review Friday night was the official start to the rally. We had the drivers breifing before heading out in the rally cars to the street party in Tanunda's Main Street. There was a great turnout of rally fans and locals checking out the cars and watching the superscreen which was displaying past years events and driver interviews. We used the hour before our start to grab a bit of tea and have a look at the competition.
We lined up and when it was our turn drove up onto the start ramp and got the interviews out of the way before going back to Nuriootpa to load up the car and head off to get a good nights rest in preperation for the real start at 10:30am on Saturday. Our service crew were ready bright and early on Saturday and we quickly got everything setup and did a few last minute adjustments to the car. A quick refuel and we were off out to stage 1 at Mt Crwaford for the Forties stage. With a huge number of spectators already there it was hardly our prefered stage to start on but it was a huge buzz. 2Km's into the stage we hit a crest we hadn't noted too well and got more air than we have ever got in our car but landed correctly and continued on with only a little bit of laughter in the car. Arond to the main spectator area for the first time taking a bit of care to get through the morning unscathed. Two cars were out already, the Evo Lancer of Lewis Parin had not left the start of SS1 with radiator trouble and Justin Friedrichs and Matt Monto had their hands full keeping a fire caused by an oil leak under control. We then headed out to SS2 Mt Gawler. It was the stage we had thought would be the most difficult as there were lots of off camber downhill sections. We were only a short way into the stage before we were madly waved down by a spectator warning us of Matt Woods Escort in the middle of the road over a blind crest. He had hit a tree pretty ahrd but was out of the car and ok so we kept on. There was about 3km's of Tarmac in this stage which was great fun but our brakes were begining to fade near the end of it so we weren't as fast as we would have liked.
We headed back to Mt Crawford for SS3 Ridgetops which was the other stage through the major spectator point. We had a clean run and were gald we noted most of the big logs laying on next to most of the corners. Without the notes there would be all sorts of trouble with them hiding behind the crests but Ash was doing a great job giving me the clear instructions needed for the 22nd quickest SARC time. We then headed in for our first service were Rob, Joe and John gave us a quick oil change and a quick check over the whole car. Out of service we went back to our second pass over the Forties stage but were having trouble holding our line coming out of the hairpins in the spectator points. A quick check of tyre pressures after the stage showed the rears had come up a little bit too much so we took out some pressure to try and get some more grip. The spectator point was full by now which was an awesome buzz to come up through the camp fire smoke columns. Goldfields was next where we had a pretty quick run over the stark white roads. This made for some pretty quick sections as the base of the road was pretty hard. Through the biggest water splash of the event which had about a foot of water in it. We then had another run through Ridgetops before the second service of the day. It was great getting into service to see all our friends and that our team had our lunch ready for us so we could just relax. After service we headed out to Forties again and were off to a flyer at the start with the confidence of having a clean run through the first morning out of the way but we got into a 6 left in thespectator point a little bit hot as it had now rutted up a fair bit which kicked the back of the car out and were in a spin heading backwards towards a narrow bit of road with a drain and pine posts on either side. We managed to pull the car up just before it to a huge roar from the 30,000 strong crowd. We flicked it back around and after a few quick breaths were back up to speed again.
Back through Ridgetops SS8 again and as we had put the spotlights on at the previous service the cresty stage was difficult picking lines as the spots block the view over the nose of the car. The time we lost due to that we gained by being able to see clearly in the now dark forest sections which were becoming torn up in the braking zones by the cars that had been before us. We had a bit of a moment through a fast sweeping corner through a gate. Thought we were going to be in trouble for a minute but managed to save it. The last two stages of the day were right down south near Lobethal. They were heaps of fun as the sun was going down and there were thousands of spectators taking up every vantage point along the way. The crowds were in party mode and not even dresses held high were enough to force us into an incident. We then drove back to Mt Pleasant relieved day one of two was out of the way without damage or mechanical trouble with the car. This of course pleased our service crew who just did a few minor things before checking the car into Parc Ferme for the night an hour early.
Day 2 Review Day 2 was an early start. Getting the car out of Parc Ferme we had a 20 minute service to get the tyre pressures right and give the windows clean and clear. We had some trouble pumping up the back right tyre and ended up booking into time control nearly a minute late. That gave us a 5 second penalty and was not the way we wanted to start the day as we had made it our aim to beat the Subaru Legacy of Paul Kinnear and Scott Fisher. First stage of the day was also the fastest of the event. Eden High has the reputation of being the fastest stage in the Australian Championship and there were two cars off the road. Gary Brown had his Mitsubishi Galant well off into the trees with a fair amount of damage and the Mitsubishi Evo of Lewis Parin had got into trouble again to make it two first stage DNFs out of two for the weekend. The fun little stage of Cromer was next where we showed some better pace than the first stage of the day. It was good to get it out of the way as we had a new set of tyres waiting for us at the following service.
We bolted on the new Kuhmo rubber and headed out to Forties again. The tyres were allowing us to hold tighter lines in the hairpins which gained us a fair bit of time through the tricky spectator stage. We were stoked and pumping the air by the time we got into the stop control. Mt Gawler was next and with added confidence the new tyres were giving us we had a hoot in here. Holding the car sideways through the linked corners and having a total blast down the bitumen scaring a few spectators at one stage who were sitting on top of a 1 meter high stone retaining wall on the outside of the corner as we came sideways through the tarmac section on our now over cooked tyres. A quick run through the Ridgetops spectator stage and back into Mt Pleasant for the final service of the event. No mechanical problems at all so our boys Phil and Rob had a pretty easy time of it. It was great to see our friends and family there again in full support of us as always.
We were fired up going out to Forties again as we were now pretty close overall to Paul Kinnear. We charged through the stage and were all set for a battle royale through the last few stages but Paul had pulled over at the finish to the stage and waved us through. I was totally annoyed as they had put so much work in putting in a new gear box last night and didn't deserve the DNF. Next year Paul!!! Out to Charleston which we had only passed over once in Recce so we decided to take it a bit easy and now that Paul was out we didn't have much to give 100% for. Little did we know that we were beating the beautiful WRX STi of Chris Bennet and David Rowe. We lost too much time in there but we'll be better for that experience next year were we will be pushing 100% to the finish no matter what as we had dropped from 18th to 20th outright in SARC.. We now headed off to SS19 the last stage of the event. With the top 10 cars running last it was great to know that they were pretty close behind. This was my favourite stage of the event and was great to see our crew had some banners and flags on a tree in the spectator point. Thanks for the support team!
Just a huge thank you to our Team Manager Susan, our service guys Joe, Rob, John and Phil and to all our friends and family that came out to cheer us on and to celebrate our achievement of finally making a top 20 in the South Australian Rally Championship and finishing what is a long and demanding event for our old beast.
